Game MVP Rico Petrocelli of Boston stabs at a Ron Santo grounder in the sixth. Petrocelli hit two home runs to lead the American League to victory.

Washington, D.C. – Rico Petrocelli set an All Star Game record by homering in his first two All-Star at-bats of his career to lead the American League to a 7-3 victory over the National League before 45,259 in attendance, including President Richard M. Nixon, at the newly-christened RFK Stadium. Petrocelli’s home runs came in the second inning off Nationals starter Bob Gibson and the fourth off Larry Dierker of Houston. His first circuit clout scored two runs as Oakland’s Sal Bando singled in front of Petrocelli. Rico’s second home run led off the inning, and perhaps but an early nail in the coffin of the Nationals. Petrocelli plated the final American run with a RBI single scoring Carlos May of the White Sox who tripled in his first All Star at-bat.

The Nationals responded to Petrocelli’s two-run second inning shot with a home run of their own, a monstrous three-run clout by San Francisco’s Willie McCovey off Johnny “Blue Moon” Odom of Oakland. The Americans were quick to retort with another pair of runs in the bottom of the frame. Gibson’s teammate, Steve Carlton, was rudely greeted in the third by a leadoff single by Minnesota’s Rod Carew and a ringing double by Oakland’s Reggie Jackson. Carlton regained his composure, but not until a ground out and a sacrifice fly by a pair of Orioles, Frank Robinson and Boog Powell respectively gave the AL a one-run lead. Petrocelli’s second home run of the afternoon padded the lead, and later in the fourth, Reggie Jackson laced his second double of the game to score Seattle’s Don Mincher to double up the score, 6-3.

The game was originally scheduled for yesterday, but rain forced the postponement. Denny McLain of Detroit was scheduled to be the starter for the American League, but he left Washington to keep a dentist appointment and did not arrive by the scheduled start. He entered the game in the fifth inning and retired the side on only four pitches. Including Petrocelli, the game featured seventeen players making their first appearance on an All Star roster.
