Game Notes

Chris Short, returning after being sidelined a year by a back injury that necessitated surgery, pitched a four-hitter as Philadelphia defeat Chicago, 6-1.

Short received support from Deron Johnson, Don Money, and Johnny Briggs who all homered.

Short started twice in early April, 1969 and had to quit because of the back ailment. He was operated for the removal of a herniated disc and missed the rest of the season.

American League
  • DET 5 @ WSA 3
Lee Maye sent the game into extra innings with a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth, but Al Kaline put evened the series in the 12th with his RBI single scoring Dick McAuliffe. Kaline subsequently scored on Jim Northrup's single later in the frame for the two-run advantage.
  • MIN 7 @ CHW 5
Leo Cardenas' two-run double lifted the Twins to a 7-5 victory over the White Sox at Comiskey Park.

Minnesota fell behind four runs in the first inning highlighted by Carlos May's HR in his first at-bat since his injury suffered in military training last August.
  • OAK 2 @ KCR 3
Pat Kelly's home run spoiled what would have been a majestic opener for Oakland's Blue Moon Odom.

Odom shut the Royals out on only two hits for 8 innings and provided his own support as Wally Bunker had stifled his own teammates. Odom hit a two-run home run in the eighth that appeared to be all the runs he would need.

Kelly, the brother of Cleveland Browns' Leroy Kelly, tied the game with his home run. Ed Kirkpatrick had reached first on and error by A's shortstop Bert Campaneris. Amos Otis, acquired from the Mets in the offseason, drove in the winning run in the 11th off A's reliever, Mudcat Grant.
  • CAL 8 @ MIL 3
Born out of bankruptcy, the Brewers brought baseball back to Milwaukee, but in name only. Their deeds, and those of their overzealous fans, in the season opener against the California Angels belied their major league status as they stumbled to an 8-3 defeat.

Frequently throughout the game, a first for a Milwaukee team since the Braves departed 4 1/2 years ago, spectators from the crowd of 37,237 - about 10,000 short of a sellout - climbed out of the stands and raced around the field.

Andy Messersmith scattered eight hits between the interruptions caused by the home fans. The lone highlight was Danny Walton's home run in the 8th, the first for the Brewers. Walton also scored the first Brewer run on Jerry McNertney ground-out in the fourth.

In other Brewer firsts, Russ Snyder collected the first base hit.
National League
  • CHC 1 @ PHI 6
Chris Short, returning after being sidelined a year by a back injury that necessitated surgery, pitched a four-hitter as Philadelphia defeat Chicago, 6-1.

Short received support from Deron Johnson, Don Money, and Johnny Briggs who all homered.

Short started twice in early April, 1969 and had to quit because of the back ailment. He was operated for the removal of a herniated disc and missed the rest of the season.
  • NYM 6 @ PIT 3
The magic that allowed the New York Mets to share top billing with the moon landings in 1969 survived the winter.

The Mets rallied from a 3-0 deficit to defeat the Pirates in their Forbes final opener, 6-3. Jerry Grote's two-run home run in the eighth proved to be the game-winner. It was Pittsburgh's largest Opening Day crowd since 1948.
  • CIN 2 @ LAD 3
Rookie Steve Garvey singled home Maury Wills in the 10th inning as the Dodgers defeated the Reds, 3-2. Willie Crawford had cut down Tony Perez at home plate in the top of the tenth to stop a Cincinnati rally.
