Gibson Notches 20th With Shutout

Bob Gibson won his twentieth game of the season with a 5-0 shutout over the Pittsburgh Pirates at Forbes Field. Gibson is the first National League pitcher to twenty victories. Detroit’s Denny McLain is currently the only other twenty-game winner in the majors. The shutout was Gibson’s seventh of the season, ranking the big Cardinal righthander one behind the Dodgers’ Don Drysdale and Indians’ Sam McDowell for the major league lead. Orlando Cepeda and Lou Brock paced the Redbird attack each with a pair of RBI in support of Gibson. Cepeda tripled home Curt Flood who led off the top of the seventh with a single, and then scored on Mike Shannon’s fly out to put the game out of reach for the Bucs. The shutout also marked the fourth consecutive road win for St. Louis who maintained its’ six game lead over perennial bridegroom San Francisco.
