The recent dominance by Cardinal ace Bob Gibson (22-6) was highlighted by a no-hitter against the second place San Francisco Giants before a sellout crowd in the opener of a Friday double header.
The game began in a cascade of boos, and ended in a tidal wave of cheers. St. Louis’ Bob Gibson threw the second no-hitter of the 1968 campaign with a 3-0 victory in a critical series opener before an announced crowd of 46,550 at Busch Stadium. The sellout crowd booed Giants manager Herman Franks and opening starter Bob Bolin as Franks’ decision denied the Redbird faithful a matchup of aces in the lidlifter. Franks held Juan Marichal out of the opener so as to not face Gibson. Marichal, as it turned out, had more tricks up his sleeve in the night cap.

By last weekend, the Giants had closed within four games of the Cardinals. The Cardinals won a series against the Reds in Cincinnati while the Giants stumbled at Wrigley against Leo Durocher’s hard-charging Cubs. When Franks’ troops arrived in St. Louis yesterday, the margin stood at six and a half games.

Bob Gibson shut the door in the Giants’ face. Gibson’s mastery kept the Giants off the bases until a 3-2 pitch to Jack Hiatt just missed for a ball to open the ninth inning. Gibson retired pinch hitters Jimmy Davenport and Frank Johnson on weak infield ground outs. Franks called upon Willie Mays off the bench, but Gibson induced Mays to fly out harmlessly to Curt Flood’s glove to end the game. The no-hitter marked thirty-three consecutive innings of no earned runs allowed by Gibson dating back to Roberto Clemente’s two-run home run in the third inning nearly two weeks ago in Pittsburgh. The streak has Gibson’s ERA down to a league leading 1.44.

The Cardinals posted three runs in the early frames as Gibson zipped through the Giants lineup with ten strikeouts through seven innings. Mike Shannon drove in Orlando Cepeda in the second inning with the first St. Louis run. Dal Maxvill plated Shannon later in the inning for the second run. Maxvill followed in the fourth inning with a RBI single scoring Tim McCarver who had opened with a single and advanced a base each on two ground outs. San Francisco could not solve Gibson. The big right hander was perfect, retiring the side in order for eight innings until home plate umpire Al Barlick called the final pitch to Hiatt a ball.

With the crowd still buzzing, Giants ace Juan Marichal (21-12) took the mound and put on a pitching display of his own. The high kicking Dominican allowed a first inning single to Bobby Tolan and a fourth inning walk to Flood for the game. Jesus Alou singled home Willie McCovey in the fourth for the game’s only run. It was the 26th one hitter thrown this season, and 8 of those were of the 1-0 variety. California rookie Andy Messersmith added the 27th one hitter later in the evening with a 6-0 victory over Boston in his first career start.
