Ron Santo was named National League Player of the Month for the month of April, 1969. Santo leads all of baseball with 8 home runs as the calendar turns to May. Santo also leads the NL in total bases (55) and is second to Cincinnati’s Alex Johnson with 21 RBI. This is the fourth Player of the Month award for Santo since 1965. The 29-year-old third baseman has become a team leader for Durocher’s Cubs who were a dark horse pick to finish second to the two-time pennant winning Cardinals.
Meanwhile in the National League West, San Francisco’s Juan Marichal was named Pitcher of the Month for April for the third time in four years. The high-kicking Dominican was also honored in 1966 and 1967. This April, Marichal was a perfect 6-0, completing five of his six starts with two shutouts. Marichal posted a 1.54 ERA in 52 2/3 innings pitched, striking out 31 and walking only 5 batters. The right-hander was one of the few standouts for Clyde King’s club that finished the month with an 11-10 mark.
