A deal a day keeps the second division away, and Fred Haney and Marvin Milkes have struck again. In their third transaction of the week, the Angels have sold sorearmed right-hander Fred Newman outright to San Jose Saturday and then brought up Larry Moose Stubing from El Paso. An 11-year minor leaguer, the 29-year-old southpaw swinging Stubing will report today and be employed exclusively as a pinch-hitter. Newman’s departure came as no surprise. After two brief appearances, Fred found his arm still isn’t strong enough following winter surgery. Maybe next year.
