Murphy Hurls No-Hitter for 1st Career Win

In his second major league game, Angels starter Tom Murphy (1-1) pitched a no-hitter against Mickey Mantle and the New York Yankees, 1-0. However, his teammates could not deliver the deciding run for the 22-year-old college graduate until Don Mincher’s pinch-hit bases loaded single that stretched beyond the reach of left fielder Roy White in the ninth inning. The crowd of 14,168 stayed until the end as Yankee starter Al Downing matched Murphy with eight shutout innings. Downing gave way to a pinch-hitter in the top of the ninth, and the Halos, who have been scuffling at the plate all season, broke through against reliever Bill Monbouquette.

After retiring Vic Davalillo on a fly out to center, Monbouquette let loose of an errant 2-0 fastball that struck Jim Fregosi in the back. Rick Reichardt, the Angels’ best hitter of late, followed with a rope down the first base line for a double, advancing Davalillo to third. Pinch-hitter Roger Repoz was announced, and the former Yankee had delivered a no-hitter to Mel Stottlemyre back in 1965 on a ninth inning single breaking a similar scoreless duel. But, Yankee manager Ralph Houk called for Repoz to be intentionally passed, loading the bases, and setting up a force play at any base. But, Mincher jumped on Monbouquette’s first offering and lined it over White’s outstretched glove. Murphy, who surrendered only two walks in the game, was the first to greet Mincher as he returned to a jubilant Angel dugout.

After the game when asked about facing his idol, Mickey Mantle, Murphy confessed, “I was scared. Here was a guy (Mantle) I idolized. You know how much his baseball card was worth when I used to save ’em? A whole other team, that’s how much.” Murphy was in kindergarten when Mantle debuted in 1951. Mantle received one of Murphy’s free passes in the seventh, and would have been the leadoff batter in the tenth if not for Mincher’s heroics. Catcher Tom Satriano said Murphy got stronger in the later innings. After the walk to Mantle, the Cleveland native retired the final eight Yankees. “He was having trouble getting his curve ball over most of the time in the early innings,” said Satriano. “I told him to start humming it in the sixth and he did. His fastball does so many things. It dips and slides and darts. And his jerky motion helps too.” Pitching coach Rocky Bridges added, “That’s the thing about him (Murphy). He can throw that high hard one for a strike. There are not too many pitchers who can do that.”

Murphy is the first major leaguer to pitch a no-hitter in his second career start. In 1953, Bobo Holloman pitched a no-hitter for the St. Louis Browns in his first major league start, however it was the Georgian’s fifth game pitched in the big leagues.

Talk in the clubhouse swirled around comparisons with another Angel rookie hurler, Bo Belinsky, the starlet magnet who pitched a no-hitter in 1962 against the Orioles in his fourth major league start. In a season dominated by pitchers thus far, this Angel rookie pitched the first no-hitter of 1968. Murphy is the seventh rookie to pitch a no-hitter, the first since Larry Jaster pitched a no-hitter amid bizarre circumstances as the Dodgers clinched the 1966 National League flag.
