The name Andy Messersmith sounds like something out of a scenario about the Luftwaffe. Messersmith is a rookie pitcher for the Angels. His derring-do in 16 appearances with the team has left the opposition muttering. “He has some of the best breaking pitches I’ve ever seen in a pitcher that young (23),” said Manager Bill Rigney. Messersmith was recalled from Seattle July 2. Andy has a 3.33 ERA in 24 1/3 innings with 15 strikeouts. Take away a three-run he surrendered to Baltimore’s Boog Powell August 10 in a blowout, he would have a 2.22 ERA. “He deserves a chance to start,” said Rigney. “But he’s been of such value in our bullpen that taking him away from it would be a handicap. Andy’s future will be as a starter, though.”
