Callison Is Kryptonite to Elroy Face

On a scorching hot day in Philadelphia, Pirate starter Bob Veale blanks the Phils through eight innings. Maury Wills led the game off with a triple, and scored on Gene Alley’s sacrifice fly to give Veale a quick one-run lead. Roberto Clemente homered in the fourth to double the lead. It marked the second consecutive day Clemente has homered and hopefully a sign that a season long slump is ending for the defending Most Valuable Player in the National League. But, the triple digit heat apparently caught up with the big left-hander Veale in the ninth. An uncharacteristic error by second baseman Bill Mazeroski opened the inning. Maz entered the game in the eighth for defensive purposes. Rick Joseph flew out, and Bill White coaxed a walk after seven pitches.

Veale appeared gassed as his glasses appeared to steam up and drip with sweat. Bucs’ manager Larry Shepard called for Roy Face, the Bucs’ ace reliever who opened the season with eighteen scoreless appearances stretching twenty nine innings of work. Yesterday, Johnny Callison snapped the streak with a ninth inning home run in the Pirates’ 3-2 victory. Mike Ryan fooled on a curve ball that nearly landed in the dirt, one handed the ball over second base and in front of Matty Alou in center. The bases were loaded, and Johnny Callison was announced as a pinch-hitter for the pitcher. Face let out a sigh, glared in for the sign, rocked and fired. This curve ball was up and Callison did not miss. The ball rocketed off his bat, and disappeared over the high right field wall at Connie Mack Stadium. Two consecutive pitches over two days results in two home runs by Callison off Roy Face, and the last one was a game-winning grand slam with one out in the ninth inning. If Face is a reliever Superman this season, then apparently Callison is his kryptonite.
