Reds Knock Dodgers From First

Don Pavletich doubled home two runs in the tenth inning at Dodger Stadium to defeat Los Angeles, 5-2, before an announced crowd of 44,594. The Reds were able to take advantage of a rare off-day by Dodger fireman Ron Perranoski who took the loss. Pete Rose greeted Perranoski to open the tenth with a ringing single on the lefty’s first offering. Rose advanced to second on Vada Pinson’s slow roller to short, and the Reds’ hottest hitter, Deron Johnson, was intentionally walked to set up a double play. However, Pavletich thwarted the Dodger plans with a drive in the gap in left center, scoring Rose and Johnson. Pinch-hitter Dick Simpson lined Perranoski’s next pitch into the right center field gap to score Pavletich.

The loss dropped the Dodgers out of a two-day tie for first place with Pittsburgh. The Pirates have tried to run away from the pack in the Senior Circuit, but the Dodgers, Giants and Braves remain within striking distance.
