Mathews Hits No. 500 in Tiger Rout

Eddie Mathews hit a pair of home runs, including career home run number 500, as the Detroit Tigers whitewashed the New York Yankees, 11-1. Mathews became the seventh member of baseball’s 500 club with a solo blast into the right field pavilion off Yankee starter Mel Stottlemyre (10-18) to open the second inning. Mathews added career clout number 501 in the sixth, a two-run clout also off Stottlemyre. Detroit broke the game open in the eighth with a six-run uprising against relievers Bill Monbouquette and Steve Hamilton. Tiger starter Mickey Lolich (15-6) went the distance for his fifth consecutive victory this month. However, he will likely be boasting about his day at the plate: 2 for 4 with a double, triple and 2 RBI. The victory maintained Detroit’s 2 1/2 game lead over the Boston Red Sox who defeated Cleveland 7-4 at Fenway Park. In other American League action, Harmon Killebrew hit a pair of home runs to tie Boston’s Carl Yastrzemski for the league lead with 45. Yastrzemski leads the AL in batting and RBI.

In National League action, the Cardinals fell short 5-4 at Wrigley Field. Mike Shannon hit a pair of round trippers for the Redbirds, but it was not enough to overcome Chicago’s early five-run lead. Randy Hundley was the hitting start for the Cubs with three RBI. Joe Niekro (14-6) took the win, and Steve Carlton (15-8) was the losing pitcher. The Giants gained ground on the Cardinals with a 4-2 win over Jerry Koosman (1-2) and the Mets at Candlestick Park. Ray Sadecki (14-5) was the winner with an assist from fireman Frank Linzy. Ollie Brown drove in three runs for San Francisco. The Cardinals hold a 3 game lead over the Giants.
