Cash Plays Money Man as Tigers Roll Bosox, 17-2

The Detroit Tigers placed an exclamation mark on their four-game sweep of the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park with a 17-2 dismantling of the home team. After Boston took the first two games of the season at Detroit, the Tigers have picked up where they left off last season. Detroit finished three games ahead of Boston last year by winning twelve of eighteen games against the Red Sox en route to a world championship. Norm Cash, who terrorized Boston pitching last season with .338 average, 6 home runs and 13 RBI in those eighteen games, drove in four runs on four hits, including a pair of home runs. Jim Northrup also collected four hits for the Bengals. Boston starter Lee Stange was stung with his fifth loss without a win. Stange walked six, allowed eight hits and six runs in three and a third innings of work. The Fenway base paths were littered with Tigers as Detroit rapped out nineteen base hits and were the beneficiaries of twelve free passes issued by Boston pitchers. Remarkably, Detroit stranded sixteen base runners as seventeen runners scored.

Stylish Jim Price, filling in for Bill Freehan who jammed his thumb earlier in the series, contributed with a pair of base hits and scored three runs. Price grabbed headlines in Detroit earlier in the season for being the first Detroit player to wear a Nehru jacket on the road. Tigers starter Joe Sparma (4-6) had a fine day at the plate and on the mound. Sparma had three hits and allowed only five hits. Two of the hits, solo home runs by Joe Foy and Ken Harrelson, accounted for the two Boston runs. The sweep at Boston came without two of Detroit’s best players, outfielder Al Kaline and pitcher Earl Wilson, who both were lost to injury last month in Oakland. Kaline suffered a broken arm, and Wilson injured his foot causing the Cy Young Award winner to miss his last three starts.
