The Detroit Tigers celebrate their second consecutive pennant and will be facing the St. Louis Cardinals who wil be seeking revenge in the Series rematch.
As the St. Louis Cardinals advanced to the World Series, the Detroit Tigers missed an opportunity to simultaneously having their ticket punched on Thursday with an eleventh inning loss against New York at Tiger Stadium. Denny McLain struck out 14 over the eleven innings, and deserved his 28th victory of the season. New York took an early one run lead in the second on a run scoring groundout by Andy Kosco scoring Joe Pepitone. Dick McAuliffe homered in the fifth to tie the game, but Mel Stottlemyre stood firm and the game reached regulation. Finally in the eleventh, New York put together a pair of singles with one out. Mickey Mantle stepped up to bat with runners on the corners. McLain coaxed a ground ball to second. McAuliffe flipped to Mickey Stanley, playing his first week at shortstop. Mantle gamely beat Stanley’s throw to first allowing the go-ahead run to score. Lindy McDaniel closed out the eleventh, and the Tigers were forced to clinch the pennant on their final road trip.

Washington’s Jim Hannan postponed the celebration on Friday with a three-hit shutout. On Saturday, the Tigers fell behind by a run, and as has been the case all season, they rallied. In the seventh, Norm Cash cashed in a pair of free passes by Senators starter Joe Coleman with a RBI single tying the score. In the eighth, Mickey Stanley doubled home McAuliffe who had drawn a two-out walk for a 2-1 lead. But in the bottom of the frame, Detroit handed the lead back with a passed ball by Bill Freehan allowed Frank Coggins to tie the game. In the ninth, Freehan atoned for the miscue with a two-run home run off reliever Bob Humphreys. Pat Dobson closed the game out with a perfect ninth inning, and the Tigers could finally celebrate. Baseball has its first Series rematch in ten years.
