Royals rookie Bill Butler threw the franchise’s first no-hitter with a ten inning effort at Yankee Stadium.
Bill Butler pitched the first no-hitter in Kansas City Royals franchise history in a 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. It took ten innings for the Royals to claim the victory as New York starter Fritz Peterson kept the visitors off the scoreboard. In the tenth, Joe Foy led off with an infield single, and advanced to second when reliever Jack Aker’s pickoff throw eluded first baseman Len Boehmer. Veteran Jerry Adair followed with a RBI single. The hit parade continued as Ellie Rodriguez singled, and Adair advanced to third base. Jackie Hernandez lined out to center, but the ball was deep enough to allow Adair to score the game’s second run. In the bottom of the tenth, Butler struck out Roy White and Frank Fernandez. Bobby Murcer turned on an 0-1 fastball that instantaneously had the remaining crowd of 11,565 think the no-hit bid was over. But, Royals first baseman Mike Fiore snared the ball for the final out.

Bulter’s royal gem was the first extra inning no-hitter since Cincinnati’s Fred Toney no-hit the Cubs in ten innings on May 2, 1917. Butler struck out ten Yankees and issued only one free pass when a 3-2 fastball missed to Murcer leading off the bottom of the eighth. A first inning error by Jackie Hernandez had earlier prevented any attempt at a perfection. Butler, a 22-year-old southpaw, was a third round selection by the Royals in the 1968 expansion draft from the Tigers organization. Butler previously had pitched at Detroit’s AA team, Montgomery, in the Southern League where he posted a modest 5-3 record and a 3.09 ERA in 46 games and only 7 starts. Butler did not appear to be in the Royals’ immediate plans until he won a spot on the roster in the spring. It appears Royals’ player procurement director, Charlie Metro, drew a royal flush from his hand with the selection of Butler.
